European cultural heritage is not just a legacy of the past, it is also an essential resource for our future, given its unquestionable educational and social value, its considerable economic potential , as well as its important dimension in international cooperation.

Based on these principles, the objectives of the European Year are to promote the exchange and appreciation of Europe’s cultural heritage as a shared resource, to raise awareness of the history and common values and reinforce a feeling of belonging to a common European area.

A better understanding and appreciation, especially among young people, of their shared and diverse heritage will help to consolidate the feeling of belonging to the Union and will reinforce the intercultural dialogue. It is necessary, therefore, to promote greater access to cultural heritage and increase its European dimension.
